Getting it right for adults with learning disabilities

Our Right for Everyone project team presented some of their findings from 48 visits to local GPs, dentists, pharmacies, foot clinics and opticians to the Lambeth Learning Disability Assembly (LLDA) meeting.

The Right for Everyone, a partnership initiative with the Lambeth Learning Disability Assembly and Lambeth Mencap supported by NHS Lambeth Clinical Commissioning group, trained learning disabled adults and their support workers to become Enter and View visits in order to assess primary care services.

The findings include a need for Easy Read information and improved signage.

The team asked Monica Fisk (pictured with Richard) Principal Podiatrist, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust foot clinic service and Brinthi Dias, new lead clinician for Lambeth Southwark and Lewisham King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Community Special Care Dentistry for their thoughts on visits to their services.

Monica and Brinthi said they “were nervous” about the visit at first but were very glad their services took part. It made them realise that they need to improve their Easy Read information and access to buildings.

We will be publishing a final “Right for Everyone” report over the next couple of months.
