New Mental Health Project for Black African and Black Caribbean men

Healthwatch Lambeth are starting a new mental health project looking at recovery, the stage when people have been discharged from hospital and are back in the community.

Healthwatch Lambeth is working on a new project for Black African and Black Caribbean men living in Lambeth who have a Severe Mental Illness (SMI). They may have been in hospital for their mental health issues and, once discharged, may be in the care of their GP or Community Mental Health Team or get support in the community.

Initial discussions at Mosaic Clubhouse and a survey at The Sanctuary showed how important it is to look at holistic support for people with Severe Mental Illness.

We are focusing on Black men as it has consistently been shown they have the poorest experiences and outcomes when it comes to mental health services.

  • What would help Black men to recover and stay well?
  • What would make them ask for help before they get to a crisis? What do they need to lead a fulfilling life?

Anna, one of our Engagement Officers is keen on giving a voice to Black men so they can help improve services for people with mental health needs in Lambeth. All feedback is anonymous.

People can share their views at a time and a place that best suits them, in person or over the phone. Each participant will receive a £15 shopping voucher.

Alternatively, people can fill in this short survey.

We also want to talk to carers as they play a key role in supporting people with a Serious Mental Illness.
