Waiting for NHS specialist eye care in Lambeth

Read about Lambeth residents' experiences of going to the opticians and waiting for specialist eye care, in our local findings from Healthwatch England's 2024 survey.

In Autumn 2024, Healthwatch England designed an online survey exploring people’s experiences of using opticians and waiting for specialist eye care, as well as their thoughts on expanding the role of opticians.

In addition, ten local Healthwatch, including Healthwatch Lambeth, were commissioned to gather responses from people in their community from South Asian, Black African, and Black Caribbean backgrounds.

Main findings

  • Going to the opticians: Most respondents attended regular eye tests at least every two years; many were eligible for free tests due to their age or medical history. Some respondents had avoided eye care due to the cost. Most recalled being offered services at an extra cost during their last visit to the opticians.
  • Waiting for specialist eye care: Two-thirds of respondents were either currently waiting or had recently waited for specialist eye care, with wait times varying widely. Most respondents noticed deterioration in their vision while waiting, affecting their ability to continue with hobbies and for some, their mental health. Few received updates or advice while waiting and wished they had clearer information on wait times, treatment, and results.
  • Expanding the role of opticians: As in the national survey, there was broad support for opticians to take on an expanded role in referrals and condition management.
